How it all started
Puerto Vallarta is a very nice resort city, the fifth-largest in the Mexican western state of Jalisco,
located right in the middle of the country. Click for map.
The city is the municipal seat of the municipality of the same name. The city had a 2005 census
population of 177,830 inhabitants, while the municipality had a population of 220,368 and about
5 million overnight stays by tourists every year. The municipality spreads over an area of 1,300.67 km2
(502.19 sq mi) adjacent to the southwestern tip of the state of Nayarit, where a new residential and resort
area was developed, called Nuevo Vallarta. The whole area includes the northern suburban town of Ixtapa,
which is not to be confused with the better-known tourist resort of Ixtapa, in the southern state of Guerrero,
very close to yet another big Mexican tourist destination: Acapulco (see map).
Some English language speakers call this picturesque city P.V. for short, due to the difficulty some have in pronouncing the double "L" in "Vallarta", (pronunced as the "y" in "you").
